Over half of the departments responding said they were already in or planning to go to the cloud. 61% of said the primary reason for going to the cloud was to \u201csave money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, IACP has just released the updated \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theiacp.org\/portals\/0\/pdfs\/CloudComputingPrinciples131010FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Guiding Principles on Cloud Computing in Law Enforcement<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0guidelines and model policies associated with cloud computing at the IACP conference in Philadelphia.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>There are ten guiding principles intended to ensure that operational needs are met while ensuring the security of systems and data:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em><strong>FBI Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) Security Police Compliance<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Data Ownership<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 LE Agencies should ensure they retain ownership<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Impermissibility of Data Mining<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 cloud service provider cannot mine or analyze data unless authorized by LE agency<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Auditing<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 cloud service provider should conduct audits of performance, use, access, and compliance<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Portability and Interoperability<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 Criminal Justice Information (CJI) should be portable to and interoperable with other operating systems<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Integrity (Physical or Logical)<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 must be maintained by cloud service provider<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Survivability<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 continuity of operations must be ensured in the face of potential changes in business structure, operations, etc.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Confidentiality<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 must be ensured<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Availability, Reliability, and Performance<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 metrics\/requirements should be specified by LE agency and ensured by cloud service provider<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Cost<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 Total Cost of Ownership (TCOP) model should be used.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These principles can be embedded in contracts or service agreements. IACP provides sample contract language that agencies can use to customize their agreements with cloud service providers. The structure and guidance provided by IACP will facilitate agencies\u2019 adoption of cloud computing.<\/p>\n<p>Visionations will provide cloud services that meet or exceed the IACP\u2019s guidelines for cloud computing.
