This month there are two items of interest: <em><strong>Fingerprint Grading<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>GSR\/Explosives &#8220;Forensic Finger&#8221;<\/strong><\/em>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A team at Penn State developed inexpensive computer technologies to <a href=\"http:\/\/news.psu.edu\/story\/280765\/2013\/07\/03\/research\/computer-programs-improve-fingerprint-grading\">grade a fingerprint<\/a> for the availability of ridgeline detail for subsequent identification. This computerized grading can provide a finer level of grading than humans are capable of. Subsequent research will explore the potential for false detail as a result of the development technique.<\/p>\n<p>A solid-state \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlehtml\/2013\/an\/c3an01179h\">forensic finger<\/a>\u201d has been developed for \u201cthe rapid and reliable identification of gunshot residue (GSR) and nitroaromatic explosive compounds.\u201d Future enhancements may include wireless transmission of information.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Periodically we\u2019ll highlight current research relevant to crime scene professionals.
